The One Show: Jermaine is ‘caught’ in Tom Hanks ’joke
Hanks ’turn as workaholic Chuck Noland in Cast Away in 2000 airs today at 2:20 p.m. on Channel 5. It follows the story of Noland, who ends up stranded on a desert island on Christmas Day after going to his last job of the year for his own firm. On the island, Noland is forced to try to cope with the isolation it brings, as well as to survive the painful conditions created by the Pacific island.
The film about survival was nominated for two Oscars, including Hanks ’performance in the Best Actor category, although he would eventually lose to Russell Crowe in Gladiator.
Hanks is still one of the biggest Hollywood stars and has earned three more Oscar nominations during his distinguished career.
However, despite being among the world’s most recognizable stars, little is known about Hanks’ private life, until he opened on Desert Island Discs in 2016.
In an interview with show host Kirsty Young, Hanks talked in detail about his childhood and relationships, especially his first marriage that will end in divorce.

Hanks married Samantha Lewes in 1978, at just 21.
Their community gave birth to children Colin and Elizabeth, whom Hanks admitted to “suffocating the loneliness” that both actors felt.
He said: “Having a 21-year-old child was the best thing that ever happened to me because I didn’t smoke weed.
“I didn’t do drugs, I wasn’t a party.”

Some six years later, Hanks met Rita Wilson, a fellow actor, who would eventually change his life forever.
By 1987, Hanks had divorced, but a year later he married Wilson, whom he noted “got” him.
The 65-year-old now said: “I don’t think I’ll ever be lonely again, that’s how I felt when I met my wife.”
Among the accolades he paid to his second wife on the show was the inclusion of Talking Heads’ One in a Lifetime, which reminded him of his first meeting with Wilson.

Another of his choices left Hanks clearly emotional, this time Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra – used in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Hanks noted that this offered him memories of the childhood and nomadic childhood he experienced.
The star recalled how father Amos worked as a cook, and in the end the family had to go where the money was, which meant 10 different houses in five years.
He continued: “This was a ‘wow’ moment of my life that started from a kid trying to understand what is interesting in this life to a young man who longs to be an artist.

“I began to wonder, ‘How do I find a dictionary for what’s ringing in my head?’
“Shortly after I started going to the American Conservatory Theater alone to watch plays I had no idea existed.”
Young further questioned the California-born star about what was on his mind, and Hanks had to come to his senses to answer.
He laughed in a tone of apology: “What have you done to me?
“No, it’s okay, because I’ve thought too much about this list. What it was, it was a dictionary of loneliness. “
Cast Away will be broadcast today from 14:20 on Channel 5.
