Rochelle Humes reveals that she felt ‘embarrassed’ of growing up in a mixed raced family as a child

Rochelle Humes has admitted that as a child, she felt ‘embarrassed’ of growing up in a mixed race family, but has learned to embrace it with age.

The 33-year-old grew up living with her mum, stepdad and their daughter Emily, 29, in East London, after her mum, Roz, and Jamaica-born dad split.

Describing that she felt ‘brainwashed’ at the time, Rochelle has explained that she felt she ‘came with a disclaimer’, due to her and sister Emily being different races.

Talking to The Sun, Rochelle detailed: ‘My mum and dad split when I was less than one, and then she moved on and had my sister with another guy, who was lovely. But me and my sister looked completely different, she is white and I am half black.

‘And we’re all brainwashed to think things should look a certain way. I think that was a lot of what was wrong when I was young. ‘

The former member of The Saturdays then explained that she felt embarrassed when her stepdad would come to pick her up from school, as she felt as though she would have to explain that her and Emily are sisters but didn’t look alike.

Admitting she’d built up a defense mechanism, Rochelle recalled that she felt like she ‘came with a disclaimer’ as other felt entitled to know the story.

Despite the conflicting feelings growing up, the singer feels that becoming a mum has helped fix the issues that she used to feel.

Admitting that she ‘no longer gives as ** t’, she explained: ‘The older I’ve got, I actually don’t give as ** t – that’s my family and that’s what’s made me, me.’

‘If we stepped into a room, my sister Emily would be the last person that you would think is my sister, but she is my sister, she continued.

Rochelle, who is a mother to Alaia, eight, Valentina, five, and one-year-old Blake, has never had a relationship with her father, Mark Piper.

But despite the rocky relationship between the two, she did reunite with her siblings from his side of the family during her late twenties.

Mark went on to have Rochelle’s lookalike sisters Lili and Sophie, alongside her brother Jake, with his new partner.

Admitting she was ‘curious’ as to why her father could look after new children but not her, Rochelle admitted that becoming a mother settled those wonderings and confirmed that she did not want a relationship with him.

Noting that no siblings are ‘half’ or ‘step’, Rochelle concluded: ‘We’re one big blended family.’
