Met Gala 2022 is finally underway and celebrities are arriving dressed in their best outfits. Here’s what ‘Anthology of Fashion’ means.
Fashion enthusiasts across the world are holding their breaths as celebrities arrive at the Met one after another.
The Costume Institute’s In America: An Anthology of Fashion theme is the second leg of a two-part exhibition that explores American fashion through the ages.
The first portion of the event, A Lexicon of Fashiontook place in September 2021.
Meaning of ‘Anthology of Fashion’ revealed
The word ‘anthology’ is literally used to refer to a collection of poems, songs or other pieces of writing.
However, the Met 2022 team have put their own spin on the word and have used it to refer to a collection of fashion / outfits from American life through the ages.
Met’s head curator, Andrew Bolton, has revealed that Met 2022 is set to feature the unsung heroes of the American design world. “The stories really reflect the evolution of American style, but they also explore the work of individual tailors, dress-makers, and designers,” he said.
The exhibition will be presented across 13 American period rooms in the museum. It also “provides a historical context for Lexicon, in a way,” says Andrew.
According to the head curator, while “Lexicon” offers an expansive look, “Anthology” gets very specific and dives into the overlooked backbone of American style.
The exhibition will have men’s and women’s dresses dating to a period between the eighteenth and the nineteenth century.
While the 2021 Met exhibit focused on the similarities that American designers share, this year’s exhibition will revolve around film vignettes in the period rooms.
What is the American Gilded age?
The 2022 Met Gala’s dress code is “Gilded Glamor and White Tie.”
The United States’ Gilded Age refers to a period of innovation and cultural revolution from 1870 to 1900.
The word gilded age literally means covered thinly with gold leaf or gold paint. It is also used as an adjective to refer to wealthy people.
