Liam Neeson, 69, plays down a recent admission that he’s fallen for a mystery woman

‘It was b *** ocks!’ Liam Neeson, 69, plays down his own recent admission that he’s ‘taken’ after falling for a mystery woman – by insisting it was a joke based on one of his films!

Liam Neeson admits reports of him fallen for a mystery woman while filming in Australia were the result of a joke he tried to make based on the title of one of his own movies.

The actor, 69, who has barely dated since the death of his wife Natasha Richardson 13 years ago, spent several months in Melbourne while filming action movie Blacklight in 2020.

Despite the city being in stage-four lockdown at the time as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, Neeson claimed he found himself in a romantic entanglement with a woman, but unfortunately she was ‘taken’.

But the Irish star has since insisted it was a joke that had been misinterpreted during his interview with the Australian breakfast show Sunrise.

‘It was b *** ocks,’ Neeson, who turns 70 next month, told the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden. ‘I said,’ I fell in love, but she was taken. ‘ That’s a joke. ‘

The actor maintained he’s still grieving his actress wife, Natasha Richardson, who died in a skiing accident in 2009 at the age of 45.

Speaking to Sunrise hosts David Koch and Natalie Barr in February about his trip to Australia, he said: ‘I loved Melbourne. I loved our Australian crew, they are fantastic workers.

‘Every department was superb. They were their own people, do you know what I mean? They had a great sense of humor. ‘

Breaking into a knowing smile, he added: ‘I made a couple of pals … I fell in love, but she was taken.’

The actor enjoyed box office success with the 2008 blockbuster Taken, in which his character – a retired Green Beret and former CIA operative – goes on an international hunt for his daughter after she is kidnapped in Paris.

Neeson’s late wife Natasha Richardson died at the age of 45 from an epidural hematoma (bleeding around the brain) two days after hitting her head during a beginner’s skiing lesson in Quebec, Canada, in 2009.

Speaking to CBS’s Anderson Cooper in 2014 about his loss, Neeson recalled arriving at the hospital and being told by doctors his wife was brain dead after her accident.

‘She was on life support … I went in to her and I told her I loved her. I said, “Sweetie, you’re not coming back from this, you’ve banged your head,” he said.

‘She and I had made a pact, if any of us got into a vegetative state that we’d pull the plug. That was my immediate thought, “Okay, these tubes have to go. She’s gone.” ‘

Neeson and Richardson married 1994 and shared two sons, Micheál and Daniel.

An insider told MailOnline at the time: ‘He told her he wanted to spend more time in New York and that he really wants to make more time for his children.

‘Freya wants something more serious, but Liam feels it is too soon. His wife only died three years ago, he wants to take things slow. ‘
