Elon Musk has had a personal life for years that has won headlines.
He has seven children, has been divorced three times, and is in a “liquid” relationship with Grimes.
Here’s a closer look at Musk’s famous family and high-profile connections.
Born in 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa, Musk was the eldest of three children. His mother, Maye Musk, is a Canadian model who appeared on the cover of Time and became a CoverGirl spokesperson at age 69. His father Errol is an engineer.
Musk told Rolling Stone that he has struggled with loneliness since childhood. “When I was a kid, I said one thing,” Musk said. “‘I never want to be alone.'”
All in all, Musk’s childhood was far from idyllic. He was ruthlessly mistreated at school and even ended up in hospital after torturers pushed him down the stairs. Shortly after his parents divorced, around 1979, Musk moved in with his father, Errol – Musk told Rolling Stone that they were now estranged.
Musk seems to be still close with his brother Kimbal and sister Tosca. All of Musk’s brothers and sisters seem to share an entrepreneurial trail: Kimbal strives to make the food industry more sustainable and healthy, while Tosca has launched the Passionflix love film network.
Musk also seems to have a good relationship with his mother. Vanity Fair announced that Maye donated a green Tesla, and she moved to California in 2013 to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

He met his first wife, Justine Wilson, at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. Writing to Marie Claire, she recalled Musk inviting her over for ice cream. She decided to stay to study, but he showed up with “two ice cream cones with pieces of chocolate leaking down his arm.”

Musk moved to Wharton, but continued to send Justin roses. They went their separate ways, but reconnected when Musk started working on his first startup, and Justine started working on her first novel after graduation. Justine said Musk was courting her by giving her his credit card to buy as many books as she wanted. The couple married in 2000.

The couple moved to Los Angeles and had a son Nevada, whom they lost to SIDS. In the end, they got twins and triplets – a total of five children. In 2010, Musk called his children “the love of my life.”
The couple divorced in 2008. After his divorce, the tech mogul began dating actress Talullah Riley.
While Musk and his first wife were estranged, Justine wrote in Marie Claire that she and Riley ended up getting along very well. She even sent an e-mail to her ex-husband’s girlfriend saying, “I’d rather live a version of things from a French movie, in which two women become friends and think about different philosophies.”

Riley and Musk were married in 2010. Two years later, the news of their divorce became public when Musk tweeted to Riley: “It’s been an amazing four years. I will love you forever. One day you will make someone happy.”
The couple remarried in 2013. Musk filed for – and then withdrew – – a second divorce the following year.
In 2016, Riley filed for divorce from Musk, which ended in late 2016. The two are still on good terms, however – Riley even appeared during Strauss’s Rolling Stone profile Mask. “We still see each other all the time and take care of each other,” she told People.
Musk started dating actress Amber Heard in 2016, but they broke up a year later due to intense schedules.
Commenting on one of Heard’s posts on Instagram, Musk said that he and his ex are “still friends, stay close and love each other” and added “who knows what the future holds”. He later told Rolling Stone: “I was really in love, and it hurt a lot.”
In May 2018, Musk arrived at the annual ceremony of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art along with Grimes, a Canadian musician. At the time, Six announced the couple had been “quietly having fun” for several weeks.

Grimes and Musk met via Twitter. Musk planned to find himself at the expense of artificial intelligence – specifically, the character of the Rococo Basilisk in her video “Flesh Without Blood” – and revealed that she beat him.
Musk later told The Wall Street Journal that he loves Grimes because of her “wild fairy art creativity and hyper-intensive work ethic.”

In January 2020, Grimes posted a photo on her Instagram and Twitter accounts where she appeared to be pregnant. She later confirmed that she was expecting a baby with Musk.
On May 4, 2020, Musk announced the birth of his son, whom he and Grimes called “X Æ A-Xii Musk”, seemingly pronouncing “X Ash A-12”. “Mom and baby are fine,” Musk wrote on Twitter.
That December, Musk said he moved to Texas after months of fighting with the state of California over restrictions over the coronavirus. Grimes and Baby X seemed to have moved in with him, and in March he shared a family photo taken near SpaceX’s facilities in South Texas.
But in September 2021, Musk told page six that he and Grimes broke up. “It’s mostly about my work at SpaceX and Tesla requiring me to be primarily in Texas or traveling abroad, and her work is primarily in LA,” Musk said at the time.
In March 2022, Grimes revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that the couple secretly got a girl through a surrogate named Exa Dark Sideræl Musk.
Grimes said “Exa” is a reference to the supercomputer term exaflops, “Dark” is about the unknown, and “Sideræl” is the “elven” spelling of sidereal, meaning “true time of the universe”, pronounced “sigh-deer” -ee- el. “Grimes and Musk call her Y for short.
Grimes told Vanity Fair that she and Musk are not together again, but their relationship is “very fluid” and they plan to have more children.
In April, Musk’s 18-year-old daughter, who is a transgender person, applied for a legal name change to confirm her gender identity and distance herself from Musk. In the submission, she wrote that she no longer wants to live with her biological father or be related to him in any way, form or form.
