Born in 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa, Musk was the eldest of three children. His mother, Maye Musk, is a Canadian model who appeared on the cover of Time and became a CoverGirl spokesperson at age 69. His father Errol is an engineer.

Musk told Rolling Stone that he has struggled with loneliness since childhood. “When I was a kid, I said one thing,” Musk said. “‘I never want to be alone.'”

All in all, Musk’s childhood was far from idyllic. He was ruthlessly mistreated at school and even ended up in hospital after torturers pushed him down the stairs. Shortly after his parents divorced, around 1979, Musk moved in with his father, Errol – Musk told Rolling Stone that they were now estranged.

Musk seems to be still close with his brother Kimbal and sister Tosca. All of Musk’s brothers and sisters seem to share an entrepreneurial trail: Kimbal strives to make the food industry more sustainable and healthy, while Tosca has launched the Passionflix love film network.

Musk also seems to have a good relationship with his mother. Vanity Fair announced that Maye donated a green Tesla, and she moved to California in 2013 to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

He met his first wife, Justine Wilson, at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. Writing to Marie Claire, she recalled Musk inviting her over for ice cream. She decided to stay to study, but he showed up with “two ice cream cones with pieces of chocolate leaking down his arm.”

Musk moved to Wharton, but continued to send Justin roses. They went their separate ways, but reconnected when Musk started working on his first startup, and Justine started working on her first novel after graduation. Justine said Musk was courting her by giving her his credit card to buy as many books as she wanted. The couple married in 2000.

In 2016, Riley filed for divorce from Musk, which ended in late 2016. The two are still on good terms, however – Riley even appeared during Strauss’s Rolling Stone profile Mask. “We still see each other all the time and take care of each other,” she told People.

Commenting on one of Heard’s posts on Instagram, Musk said that he and his ex are “still friends, stay close and love each other” and added “who knows what the future holds”. He later told Rolling Stone: “I was really in love, and it hurt a lot.”

On May 4, 2020, Musk announced the birth of his son, whom he and Grimes called “X Æ A-Xii Musk”, seemingly pronouncing “X Ash A-12”. “Mom and baby are fine,” Musk wrote on Twitter.
That December, Musk said he moved to Texas after months of fighting with the state of California over restrictions over the coronavirus. Grimes and Baby X seemed to have moved in with him, and in March he shared a family photo taken near SpaceX’s facilities in South Texas.
But in September 2021, Musk told page six that he and Grimes broke up. “It’s mostly about my work at SpaceX and Tesla requiring me to be primarily in Texas or traveling abroad, and her work is primarily in LA,” Musk said at the time.

Grimes said “Exa” is a reference to the supercomputer term exaflops, “Dark” is about the unknown, and “Sideræl” is the “elven” spelling of sidereal, meaning “true time of the universe”, pronounced “sigh-deer” -ee- el. “Grimes and Musk call her Y for short.
