Everything To Know About Jacquemus’ Hawaiian Runway Show

Lorde’s psychedelic and idyllic highly-anticipated album Solar Power plays in the background as we wait for Jacquemus’ Spring / Summer 2022 show to begin.

The parallels between the youthful summertime album and the luxury French labels’ island-inspired collection are obvious and it couldn’t be a more fitting soundtrack to compliment the Polynesian backdrop.
Perfectly titled ‘Le Splash’, Jacquemus brought their distinct female-forward sensibility and sensual feminine silhouettes to the island of O’ahu, Hawaii. We have that oceanic feeling.

The collection was a celebration of nature, or in Jacquemus’ own words “awe inspiring landscape”, with the local community modeling the collection, both on the runway and the front row.

Sea blues, sunburnt oranges, candy colored-sky pinks and palm greens made up the balmy color palette with Jacquemus’ classic silhouettes given an aquatic refresh.

The collection was resort wear, but not as you know it.

Glass embellishments created by Canadian artist Tanya Lyons were embroidered onto signature skirts to emulate water drops.

Elsewhere, leather snorkels were creatively employed as accessories and inflatable pool tools recontextualized as wearable ornaments. Towel-inspired striped knitwear is seen as a strawberry colored midi skirt or wetsuits reinvented as bike shorts.

But it wouldn’t be a fashion show if it wasn’t for a bit of unpredictability or fashion drama.

Taking to social media, Jacquemus ’creative director Simon Porte Jacqeumus revealed just how chaotic the show was behind-the-scenes.

Hours before the models were set to grace the runway, torrential rain ruined the festivities.

“I know the collection is called ‘Le Splash’ but I didn’t expect that splash to be honest,” the designer wrote.

“We were blocked under the water, all super wet, the clothes dirty… a real fashion drama if we can say that.”

“But every local from our team and cast kept telling us that this was a beautiful blessing, that the rain is beautiful.

“All the energy suddenly turned into something so beautiful and full of meaning. Then, the sun came back again after an hour.”

If the lack of runway on your social media feeds has you concerned, the brand has assured us they aren’t gatekeeping them, with Jacquemus himself sharing an explanation, Jacquemus shared an explanation on his Instagram story.

“The pictures are not out yet cause all the clothes were so damaged wet and wet hur it hurts.” Honestly, the runway video is enough for us. Simon, you go enjoy a mojito.

This collection is groundbreaking for many reasons, but most of all, for continuing to cement Jacquemus ’commitment to pioneer a new movement for fashion.

Coed presentations are expected, and the diversity of the human body in all its shapes and sizes are revered on Jacquemus’ runway.

The maison has also shifted from the industry’s typical seasonality, choosing instead to present their SS / 22 collection six months after his contemporaries were debuting their SS / 23 shows back in September 2021.

Jacquemus is also moving towards a “see now, buy now” model, with the collection already available for purchase. As for what we’re adding to our carts? The baby blue asymmetrical puffed mule and strawberry pink draped mini dress, with express shipping of course.

Bravo Simon and the Jacquemus team, this is truly one for the books.
