Charlie Sheen’s father Martin Sheen says changing his name to Hollywood is “one of my regrets”

Martin Sheen changed his name to become a successful Hollywood actor like his idol James Dean – but today the star wished he could stay as Ramon Estevez.

“That’s one of my regrets,” the 81-year-old told Closer Weekly recently. “I never officially changed my name. Ramon Estévez is still on my birth certificate. It’s on my marriage license, my passport, my driver’s license. Sometimes they persuade you when you don’t have enough insight or even enough courage to stand up for what you believe in it and you pay for it later. But, of course, I only speak for myself. “

It was 1968 when Sheen, father of Charlie Sheen, starred in the adaptation of “Hamlet” in New York. Since then, he has led a decade-long career in Hollywood, appearing in hit movies and shows such as “Apocalypse Now”, “Badlands”, “Wall Street” and “The West Wing”, among others.

Shin said that despite his father’s remarks, after finishing high school, he decided to go to New York “almost immediately”.

“You couldn’t blame him,” Sheen thought of her father’s disapproval. “Both my parents were immigrants. My father was from Spain and my mother from Ireland. My real name is Ramon Estevez. My father was very practical. He was a factory worker for most of his adult life, and he wanted to go. to college and improve my chances of making a better life than him. We’ve had some very, very painful conflicts about that. “

But in the end, the patriarch warmed to the idea that his son was in show business.

“He was a big fan of the 50s western TV“Sheen explained. “One night we started a discussion about my going to New York. He told me: ‘You want to go to the theater. You can’t sing, you can’t dance. You don’t know what you’re doing! ‘ I said, ‘Dad, you sit here every night and watch westerns – do you see anyone singing or dancing?’ He said, ‘No, but you don’t ride a horse either.’ He finally realized that I was committed and realized that it would be a life and death struggle with me if I did not continue it. When I got ready to go, he blessed me and continued to bless me for the rest of his life. I loved him. “

All four of Shin’s children continued their acting careers: Charlie, as well as Emilio Estevez, Renée Pilar Estevez and Ramon Estevez. Charlie’s birth name is Carlos Irwin Estévez.

Sheen said that at the beginning, he was “not aware” that everyone wanted to leave their mark in Hollywood.

“I was so self-involved and trying to be a provider that I wasn’t aware of their propensity to be actors,” he said. “I worked on a show once and Emilio showed up. I thought he was here to visit me, but he got a role in the same show. The only influence I had on Emilio was to keep his name. When he was initially, his agent told him advised her to change her name to Sheen, and he didn’t want to. And thank God he didn’t. “

Looking back on his career, Sheen said he has a favorite role and pays homage to his roots.

He who fills me with the deepest gratitude and satisfaction is called the ‘Way’ said Sheen about the 2010 film. “We made it in Spain about the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and dedicated it to my father, who was from Galicia. It was written, directed and acted by my son Emilio Estevez. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Thousands of people watched the film and were inspired to make the pilgrimage. It is a great source of pleasure and pride. “
