Exclusive: Reality TV producer recently gave OG actors in his late night show, ‘The Nightcap with Carlos King’, and talked to Gria about how the special happened.
The “king” of the kingdom of Reality TV has just become even bigger!
Carlos King, known for producing some of the most successful reality TV shows in the genre, built his own franchise (“Love & Marriage”) on OWN network and launched late night talk show on which he recently reunited the original “True Housewives of Atlanta” team, and even has a successful podcast, “Reality With The King. ”
TheGrio caught up with King at this year’s American Black Film Festival in Miami, getting exclusive details on how the special came about, why NeNe Leakes really didn’t attend and how much this new era of his career is special to him.
With so much on the plate, you’d think King would risk being too thin, but the producer tells Gray that he simply enjoys gratitude.
It’s funny because my team always says, ‘Are you tired?’ And you know what? Can I take a nap? Of course! But I love it and I will never complain because it is something I have wanted for a very long time and since I am so spiritual, I always remind myself that God will not give me more than I can bear! ”King said.
“The biggest thing for me now is separating things … I’m not going anywhere on the weekends! The girl is sitting at home by the pool, and I am sleeping while watching ‘Bling Empire’! ”
The launch of “The Nightcap with Carlos King” was a dream come true, King revealed. “I’ve wanted such a show since I was 12,” he said. “So, the fact that it’s 30 years later, that it’s my job, is so much fun and I spend time in my life. I always thought I would have a daytime performance, and the fact that it’s late at night, I didn’t expect it to come, but it’s perfect! Late at night, you can be sharp and that I have this show on Saturday nights after my franchise, ‘Love and Marriage’, it’s a love letter to fans of my show and the reality TV community. ”
In his biggest hit so far for fans, King recently reunited the original cast of “True Housewives of Atlanta” on “Nightcap,” bringing together women in the same room for the first time since the first reunion. However, there was one notable exception: NeNe Leakes. While fans speculated as to why the reality TV star did not attend the gathering, King cleared up all the rumors.
“At first I said, ‘OK, I might invite No to get involved,'” he explained. “But then the producer said, ‘Instead of isolating one person, why don’t you do something you’ve never done before, and that’s a surprising reunion with the women you started with on reality television’?”
King said that he called all the original members of the cast at the time, simply asking everyone to attend the show, but he did not reveal any plans to reunite. While Kim Zolciak-Biermann, DeShawn Snow, Shereé Whitfield and Lisa Wu answered in the affirmative, King remarked that Leakes kindly declined.
“She said, ‘You know I love you’ and ‘congratulations, but honestly, with everything that’s going on, I’m not doing any press.’ (Like theGrio previously publishedearlier this year, Leakes sued the companies behind the “True Housewives of Atlanta”, saying they “nurtured and tolerated a hostile and racist work environment.”)
And I said, ‘OK, good,’ “King continued. “She never knew I was getting together, nobody knew!”
King believes the reunion show was part of his destiny. “To this day, I’m pinching myself because it shows you that I was really the only one who could do it,” he said. “Because of the fact that they never wondered who would be there, and they were never angry at other people who were there and had a good time. It was a walk along the path of remembrance. What I want to do now is celebrate the people who have been on this journey with me. ”
King’s hour-long franchise shows, “Love & Marriage: Huntsville” and “Love & Marriage DC,” respectively, begin airing Saturdays at 8 p.m. They will be followed by “The Nightcap with Carlos King” at 22:00 ET. All the air on OWN network.
