In a deal that could change the game and affect how streamers and movie distributors coexist, Apple has struck a pact to buy an unnamed Formula One racing movie that is Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski directed by and brad pitt star-bound, Hollywood Reporter he learned.
The deal, which took almost five months, reunites Kosinski with many of his own Maverick team, including the writer Honor Kruger and manufacturers Jerry Bruckheimer i Chad Oman from Jerry Bruckheimer Filmsas Maverick he hopes gross billion dollars or more in his theatrical performance. They all returned in the same capacity for the racing project and were joined by Sir Lewis Hamiltonthe seven-time F1 world champion, who will produce along with Pitt’s inscription Plan B.
The key to the deal is the distribution component in cinemas. But instead of symbolically showing in a small number of cinemas or opening on a day and date, the film would have an exclusive – and global – screening of at least 30 days (one source says it could go up to 60 days) before heading to Apple TV + . The distribution partner should get involved, and it is unclear when they will contact him. This could happen before production, potentially triggered by the hiss of the reel, or perhaps after production is complete.
Apple has previously released movies in theaters, with an animated film Wolfwalkers enjoying the 30-day window and Macbeth’s tragedy got 21 days. However, these were editions for smaller awards, not tent-style extravagances.
In the second, insiders say the theatrical component is structured in such a way that Apple and filmmakers share 50-50 downloads from the big screen release. The single contract, in essence, pays the creative team in three ways: their advance fees, their hefty redemption fees and theater support. Sources say Kosinski, who will also produce, and Bruckheimer will see payday days long in the eight-figure figure, with Pitt and his company reaching $ 40 million to $ 50 million. Apple had no comment.
Prior to this contract, the creatives and their representatives had Sophie’s choice: buy out or encourage theatrical release? But the CAA, which represents Pitt, Kosinski and Bruckheimer, sought another answer: Why not both?
Part of the bet here are Pitt and F1 races. Although there is no box office record Maverick ‘Tom Cruise, Pitt is an equally big name on a global scale. And F1 is a growing and sexy sport that embodies a certain kind of enviable lifestyle. The second bet is a theatrical experience that will take the audience to a place most have never been before: in a one-seater runner. Just me Maverick and Kosinski generate praise for real-world practical effects that put the audience in the cockpit of the F-14, the goal being to put the viewer behind the wheel of what is basically a rocket ship on the track.
The idea for the project came from Kosinski, who, after many years of cutting, is proving to be an instigator of ideas. Top Gun a swamp with a light bulb concept that hired Cruise to make a sequel. The director briefly met Hamilton via Cruise during filming Maverick, and so when he decided to take a step towards his idea, CAA and his management firm Grandview organized a meeting in San Vincente Bungalows with Bruckheimer, Hamilton and his manager, Penny Thow, where things started to crystallize. A search for a writer followed, with the initials Maverick writer Kruger is chosen, ahead of a fateful meeting just before Thanksgiving between Kosinski and Pitt, where Kosinski persuaded the actor to join the racing team for an experienced retired storyteller to mentor a promising rookie.
In December, the CAA handed over the project to studios and steamships in a short 30-minute period that elicited immediate offers. It eventually came down to Apple, Netflix, Amazon and MGM, then run by Michael De Luca. (The latter CEO is now ua leading film business in Warner Bros. and could be in a position to compete once again for this when it comes to the distribution aspect.) Apple has pushed hard into the corner with a theatrical commitment that, when fulfilled, could prove to be a model for future contracts that recognize both theaters i streaming is there to stay for the duration.
