Like many other fashion expressions, “minimalism” is one that has become increasingly diluted over time. Slipping out of a movement pushing the boundaries of the 80s and 90s, advocated by Issey Miyake and Calvin Klein, to become a broad concept relating to all that is portrayed in black and white, minimalism has experienced a small identity crisis. But then a new guard came.

British fashion designer Phoebe Philo was one of the first contemporary designers to launch a new minimalist revolution. Having taken over Céline in 2008, Philo has continued to create some of the styles that have set the agenda the most in this decade, and which are still desirable to this day. The Row Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen also took the lead with their bare-handed approach to fashion, which favored construction, timeless design and luxurious inventions over fleeting trends.
Skip ahead 15 years and the minimalist market is booming. With the power of social media setting trends and increasing pressure on the industry to create collections that will stand the test of time, the list of brands continues to grow. Fans of minimalist fashion certainly have no flaws: from Totême and Raey to Frankie Shop and Khaite, any evidence of the fact that minimalism is no longer a one-dimensional aesthetic.
